Viviamo in un mondo debole, spietato e privo di valori. Un mondo dove l’effimero vince sul duraturo, il superficiale sul profondo, l’immagine sull’essenza. Sulla base di queste considerazioni, già opportunamente sviscerate e setacciate da sociologi, psicologi e opinionisti vari, mi chiedo (e vi chiedo): possiamo considerare questi anni – diciamo, a partire dai primi ’90 - come gli anni della musica introspettiva e depressa? Sono esempi lampanti di “band depresse e introspettive” i Radiohead, Black Heart Procession, Low, Sigur Ròs e così via. Come dire: musica profonda per una società che non sa più vivere! Mi sbaglio?
Non c'è dubbio che la società attuale che porta all'estremo il "mito" dell'immagine, abbia delle enormi ripercussioni sulle persone (artisti e non). Il continuo confrontarsi ad un livello spesso "basso" di conversazioni e discorsi futili - vedi l'esempio lampante della televisione - porta, le persone più "emancipate" a scorgere delle realtà più introspettive e al tempo stesso pessimiste. Però, non credo che, almeno in ambito musicale, l'inizio della "musica introspettiva" coincida con gli anni novanta. Già la new wave (penso ai Joy Division) si presentava in modo assai depresso (conseguenza riflessa di un disagio interiore causato - già allora - da una società che non sapeva vivere..). Sicuramente gli anni attuali sono gravidi di ossessioni e - parte della musica - ne risente. Alla tua lista aggiungerei Antony & The Johnsons(!), il Beck di Sea Change, Yann Tiersen & Shannon Wright.. e la lista potrebbe non finire. La "musica depressa" non comincia oggi, ma - e mi riallaccio al tuo ragionamento - in questo periodo sicuramente sembra andare per la maggiore (almeno in certe latitudini).

Dai primi '90 l'indie rock in genere pare essersi ripiegato su se stesso,oltre che in senso depressivo, adottando proprio il parametro della LENTEZZA espressiva ed esecutiva .

Stres, fibrillazione, disturbi psico-somatici a volte anche invalidanti sono oggi i nostri amici, in agguato in qualsiasi momento.

erano più deprimenti gli anni 80, almeno certi anni 80 - molto nervosismo, molta agitazione, molto strepito per nulla, diceva il teatrante - certo, l'agitazione e lo stranimento, la depressione mascherata porta a scrivere numerose cose fighe, negli ottanta c'era un mucchio di roba buona appena sotto il livello del mainstream .... ma era veramente no future, agitarsi terribile senza costrutto -
nei 90 è arrivata una maggiore consapevolezza ... che non tutto è merda e da buttare e che a volte combattere battaglie significa diversificare la propria azione per non sbattere il grugno sul solito muro di gomma - difficilissimo, evidente, lunghissimo, sfiancante ... ma tanto la vita è così - nei 70 pensavamo che ci sarebbe voluto un attimo, negli ottanta che non ci saremmo mai arrivati, nei 90 la consapevolezza della velleitarietà dei primi e della profonda depressione dei secondi -
posto che, tuttavia, nei 70 come negli 80 io mi sono divertito un casino e fatto un mucchio di cose, nei 90 ho dovuto frenare, mi sono fatto un culo così e ho partorito ben poco - Sarà anche l'età, probabilmente - Se, prima o poi uno ,sganassone in faccia, salutare o meno, ti deve arrivare, è meglio che arrivi DOPO .... Almeno hai avuto il tempo di sputare in faccia ad un po' di merdosetti e di sfruttare l'indubbia agilità dell'essere GIOVANI per scappare a gambe levate quando ti stanno per fare il sederino (questa l'ho presa da un muro di via boccea a Roma (quartiere molto destro), scritta firmata da quei nazisti degli irriducili cui non difetta, talvolta, lo humour .... "NOI 15, LORO 50 ! AHO', SEMO SCAPPATI !!!! "
Caro JC, Caro Max, certa oscura depressione c'era anche negli anni '80, senza dubbio, ma la musica era intesa ancora come evasione, incontro e divertimento...adesso, invece, l'artista - consapevolmente - si limita alla rappresentazione di uno stato d'animo oscuro e depresso, perdendo - spesso e volentieri - quella musicalità a cui siamo stati sempre abituati (anche nei meno "felici" anni '80 o certi anni ‘80)...
…insomma, penso che l’aspetto imprescindibile del rock “alternativo” di questi anni sia il disagio che genera depressione. Quel “male di vivere” rintracciabile principalmente nei Black Heart Procession, Low e L’Altra ma anche negli stessi Yo La Tengo e Wilco (e tanti altri ancora)…Gruppi fondamentali per l’epoca musicale che stiamo vivendo. Un periodo caratterizzato dalla “musica depressa” e da un mondo che – ahinoi - non sa più vivere.
Io sono sempre con la testa nei favolosi 70 dove la musica esprimeva tutto il senso di libertà di quegli anni.Oggi la musica si nutre dei malesseri della società ed è per questo che soffre di maggior pessimismo.
Penso a gruppi come gli WHO che non combattevano, ma erano loro stessi l'immagine di quegli anni.
I musicisti degli anni 90 invece hanno dovuto dare profondità alla loro musica e ciò che ne è scaturito è tutto quel mal di vivere rabbioso (il grunge), incazzato (il punk) e malinconico(l'indie rock in generale).
La differenza sta proprio ne periodo storico; ideali da realizzare e speranze utopiche (anni 70) e rabbia verso ciò che effettivamente non si è potuto avere (dai 90 ad oggi).
Spero in una nuova rivoluzione musicale.....ma prima deve cambiare il vento.....
Aggiungo Sparklehorse, Swell, Blonde Redhead, Mogwai. La musica depressa è figlia legittima e consapevole di una contemporaneità disturbata e sterile. Un po' come anticipato dagli Ottanta dei Sonic Youth, dei Fugazi e degli Husker Du, la rivoluzione parte dalla frustrazione quotidiana e acquista una consapevolezza autosufficiente a stare bene senza urlare. Insomma, la musica introspettiva e depressa è come una vita (la mia come quella di molti giovani del nuovo millennio) passata a decidere e a pensare a bassa voce, senza urlare (e dice bene massimobernardi).

Forse il discorso non è tra la musica depressa e non ma tra il bisogno sempre maggiore (negli ultimi 15 anni)di farla e ascoltarla rispetto agli anni 60' e 70'.Gli anni 80' sono difficili da decifrare forse perchè la musica malata e depressa nasce sostanzialmente in quegli anni (quasi tutto il fenomeno indi/rock non trae ispirazione da una certa new wave inglese?).La cosa più brutta o più bella è che in questi anni di rock/pop depresso (per il sottoscritto e credo per tanti altri amanti della buona musica )non se ne riesca più a fare a meno.

…nascondevano l’inizio della depressione che è diverso dal palesare uno stato d’animo…ora invece la depressione sembra persino ostentata, come se andasse di moda, (ma non lo è assolutamente) …credo, dico credo, che 20-30 anni fa una musica introspettiva/depressiva non avrebbe attecchito così facilmente…prima la depressione come rabbia e fragore, adesso la depressione come rassegnazione, acquiescenza, presa di coscienza di “una società che non sa più vivere”…che poi non vuol dire assenza di ricerca e mancanza di speranza. Anzi, spesso preferiamo questa musica ad altre proprio perché stanchi delle solite formule. Ad esempio gli INTERPOL mi piacciono assai ma esprimono un malessere già udito, ciò non accade invece ascoltando i LOW. Come dire, molti credono di stare bene ma inconsapevolmente sono depressi, e la musica questo lo sa, e tende a riappropriarsi dei valori vitali quali tranquillità, pace, serenità, romanticismo...Oggi più di ieri!
A mio modesto avviso, la musica introspettiva e depressa è sempre esistita. Doors, Van Der graf Generator, King Crimson ecc ecc solo per parlare dei 70. Ma anche negli altri decenni ci sono esempi lampanti fino ai giorni nostri e non solo per quanto riguarda il mondo rock. Io non mi preoccuperei più di tanto anche perchè la musica introspettiva e depressa, non so perchè, a me, piace. E' vero, comunque, che viviamo come dice luca in un mondo privo, oramai, di valori e che tutto, o quasi, sembra falso. Ma non credo che questo influisca sul modo di suonare di molti gruppi contemporanei. ciao
